For my artistic representation, I chose to create a collage of 2020 memes. As the background, I placed news articles that were released around the time that COVID-19 started to break-out in the United States and a graph of current cases in the US. I put the memes on top so that you can barely read the headlines. Memes have been a popular coping mechanism during 2020. Even with people separated and isolated, humor has connected people to each other through shared experiences online. Memes have become a simple way to step back and see a dire situation more easily. As Peter McGraw, the Director of The Humor Lab and University of Colorado Professor, says that humor gives the opportunity to transform upsetting things into a more humorous moment. “It allows us the opportunity to see situations differently.” It helps a very distressing time become easier to bear as people laugh and unite through the absurdity and oddity of a very trying year.
